Intermodal Transportation Authority Business Park Access Roads
Location: Warren County, Kentucky
Geotechincal Consultant: Wayne Karem
Dr. Karem, while at another firm was retained by Mayes, Sudderth, Etheredge
Inc. to provide
geotechnical engineering services for the
planning phase of
a new
industrial park which included design of access
roads
on the
Phase I
development of 1200 acre industrial park. This project
is
located
between
I-65
and US 31W in Warren County in south central
Kentucky.
The access roads for the ITA industrial park will utilize 24-foot wide, two-lane roadways. Traffic loading for the roadway, once the development is completed, is anticipated to be 700,000 to 1,500,000 18-kip Equivalent Single Axle Loads.
The industrial park is located in an active Karst terrain were dropouts and sinkholes are common. To evaluate the conditions along the proposed roadway our exploration program included the use of geophysical methods and a select drilling program where the geophysics encountered anomalies that may have been potential dropouts (sinkholes). Borings were spaced at 200-foot intervals along the proposed roadway. Additional borings were also conducted in areas where topographic depressions are located. Staff engineers supervised the borings and logged the samples as they were recovered. grading, sinkhole remediation and pavement recommendations for the proposed roadways.
Dr. Karem is currently providing geotechnical engineering services for the development of the infrastructure of the park. Additionally, he published a paper concerning the exploration of the park in a Karst Conference in Tallahassee Florida sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2008.
