Example of Seismic Refraction Array

A 50 megawatt renewable bio-energy plant is planned for the Coalfields Industrial Park in Hazard Kentucky. The facility will use wood by-product materials each year from Eastern Kentucky’s large wood products industry to fuel the plant. Vector Engineers, Inc. and Dr. Wayne Karem was retained to provide geotechnical engineering design services for locating and designing the foundations for the proposed facility. Due to Dr. Karem’s research on building on mine spoil fills and his direct knowledge of the subsurface conditions at the Coalfields Industrial Park, Vector was instrumental in conducting a geotechnical subsurface site characterization for the proposed facility. The subsurface site characterization included seismic refraction studies to evaluate the depth and location of an underground mine bench that had been filled with mine spoil fill. The challenge of building on mine spoil sites is the excessive differential settlement due to consolidation of the mine spoil over time.
